K-Shane Lake Lodge NWP South Africa – where you can experience 266 days of sunshine per year.
The eco-friendly, game orientated estate of KSHANE LAKE LODGE is just 67 km from Sandton the Northern suburb of Johannesburg. As a development it offers a unique lifestyle expression where residents coexist in harmony with the numerous wildlife species. The 47 stands are each between 5000m2 and 15000m2 and the antelope species, including Blesbok, Impala, Kudu and Zebra roam freely.
With the magnificent Magaliesberg mountains as the Northern backdrop to the estate, the estate ends on the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam, a 195,000,000 cubic meter reservoir built along the Crocodile river in 1945.The eastern boundary is in conjunct with a wildlife sanctuary which includes, Giraffe, Sable, Eland and various other antelope species and also includes MTB tracks.

The Home
Architecturally designed with strong lines and elegant simplicity which compliments its natural surroundings.
The owners of this exceptional home took great care in their selection of their interior designer, they wanted someone who understood their energy and could interpret their emotional living into functional spaces. Flowing organized and clearly defined areas that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional were the main highlights of the brief, as was a subtle Balinese feel for the interior, but above all, the 1200m2 house needed to be a home. They chose world renowned South African designer Brian Leib.
Brian’s interior style is transient, fusing together the organic and structural, the antique and the contemporary, a perfect blend of yin and yang. The exterior requirements prescribed a plethora of predominantly natural materials: timbers, stone and thatch (an African grass used for roofing) while walls had to be plastered in rough textured earthy tones. Timber decks constituted the external areas and indigenous landscaping is aimed at minimizing the overall aesthetic impact on the existing natural landscape.
The slate-clad columns of the main entrance give rise to the triple volume retreat-styled porte cochère. The entrance is set over a koi pond and the Buddha statue adds to the Zen feel of the home’s threshold. The large open plan living space is defined only by bulkhead ceiling detail. These multi-layered ceiling bulkheads house the home’s lighting and sound equipment while breaking up the uniform pattern left by the shuttering of the cast slab. The main communal spaces, incorporating the kitchen, dining room, bar and living rooms, service the house’s three en suite bedrooms. The off-set levels of these areas create interesting vantage points from which the views to the outside can be taken in.
The French oak flooring is a connective neutral base linking all the spaces. Bold fabrics in fuchsia, peppermint, lime, and blues accentuate the contemporary furniture. Organic objects are interspersed as functional and aesthetic pieces. The entire living area is enclosed by double volume bi-fold glass doors. Drapery in cool natural silk, cotton, and linen screens some of the over-abundant light provided by the sunny African skies. A twelve-seater dining room is central to the entertainment area. The kitchen and outdoor pool-side deck are only a few feet away.
The first-floor landing is stark, cool and grey – a neutral departure from the vibrant colors used downstairs but well suited to introduce the sleeping quarters of the house. Travertine tiles modestly accessorized with a handwoven anemone-like sculpture lead you along the glass balustrade. Here the roofing thatch is visible through the open trusses and aged beams of the pitched roof.
The upstairs area is divided into sections. The main bedroom with en suite bath and dressing rooms, which has undisturbed views of the estate, a modern-day luxury where space is at a premium. For some, nothing could be more enjoyable than waking to the sounds of the African bush as golden sunshine comes streaming in. The other wing serves as a guest area incorporating the Zebra and Giraffe-themed suites. The defining features of these suites are the special commissioned painted canvasses by South African artist Michelle Decker.
From this area you can also access the fully contained guest wing with kitchen, dining and living area, and the additional Koi and Lotus themed boutique style en suites.
To complete the full functionality of this home, a suspended bridge links the main bedroom suite to an adjacent structure housing the office and gym, which is fully equipped, plus steam room and Rasul spa. The lower portion of this building extends to the entertainment area of the poolside deck with the inclusion of a bar, games room and movie theatre.
This lifestyle symbolizes something close to the African Dream, a sanctuary to work and play, and take in all of what this amazing country has to offer, but most of all one which you can call home.
This home has appeared in issue 52 in the OBJECT INTERNATIONAL magazine, of which there are only 4 publications per year. This magazine, which is printed in the Netherlands, received the Best International Interior Magazine Award in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and the Journalism Award in Italy. Interior Designer Brian Leib has a house in each publication for that year. When Object China was launched it featured the photograph of the landing over the lobby area of this home on the cover page.
When OBJECT INTERNATIONAL launched their coffee table book, LUXURY LIVING AROUND THE WORLD, this home is one of the 20 homes featured.
VOL 14 of the ANDREW MARTIN INTERIOR DESIGN REVIEW coffee table book features the top 100 designers worldwide and attracts entries from all over the globe and is described by THE TIMES as “THE OSCARS FOR THE INTERIOR DESIGN WORLD”. This home is not only featured in this volume, the photograph of the entrance, lobby and Zen garden was voted amongst the “BEST OF THE BEST”.

The Elephant Sanctuary
The Elephant Sanctuary – South Africa – has three African Elephant Sanctuaries across three provinces in Southern Africa. The Elephant Sanctuary, started in 1999, grew from five elephants to a total of twelve African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana). These Elephants have been domesticated through positive reinforcement animal management principles, and as a result, provide us with the unique opportunity to interact with them.
Visitors are taken on a journey into the world of the African elephant and are guided through an unforgettable experience with these magnificent creatures. Visitors are able to touch, feed and get to know these animals. The Elephant Sanctuary is unique in that it offers visitors the incredible opportunity to walk hand-in-trunk with the elephants. Enter the world of the Elephant with Elephant Back Riding. Bare-back Elephant Back Riding enables us as humans to feel the power and bulk of an elephant in contrast with the quietness, delicateness and grace of these mammoth creatures’ movement as they walk/glide across the ground. Hartbeespoort Cable Car
The Hartbeespoort Cableway offers visitors panoramic views of the beautiful Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounding areas, as well as excellent recreational and educational facilities. The owners take pride in their beautiful facilities and revamped cableway.

The Lion and Rhino Nature Reserve
The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is a privately owned, non-subsidized game reserve, covering approximately 1 200 ha on the typical highveld of Gauteng. The reserve is situated in the “Cradle of Humankind”, a declared World Heritage Site, about 40 km north-west of Johannesburg and 60km west of Pretoria.
The reserve was founded in 1985 by Ed Hern, a well-known stockbroker, with the aim of preserving this beautiful area for private leisure. Prior to this the farm was utilised as a dairy and agricultural produce farm. From a modest beginning of two white rhinos, “Ouvrou” and “Bulle”, imported from a zoo in Germany, and some antelope species, the reserve now boasts 600 head of game representing 25 different species. Public demand to visit the reserve became overwhelming and this was met in 1990, coinciding with a name change from “Kiepersol” to “Rhino Park”.
Emphasis was also placed on breeding and the success of this project is best illustrated by the fact that no less than 18 white rhino calves have been born at the reserve to date. Increasing the number of species is always hampered by external factors such as climate, habitat, grazing, availability, etc. but the reserve has always strived to reach this goal in order to enhance the entertainment and educational value to the public – many of whom would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience wildlife in this manner due to cost and distance constraints.
Hot Air Ballooning
If you are going to do it – do it in unassailable style. Its sunrise, the silence of flight is punctuated only by the occasional blast of the powerful burners and the faint call of a bird or animal far beneath. The thrill is indescribable.
You’re sipping fine champagne while hovering gently above the tree tops of the beautiful Magalies River Valley, or drifting majestically high above the Magaliesberg range in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site, just 45 km north of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, a region boasting some of the best ballooning weather in the world.
